Piece by Piece!
Piece by Piece! examines the physical and visual changes of land development and the active role we take in the alteration of natural space. The installation forces participants to internalize the action of property developers who choose what land to buy, raze, and populate with boxes. Viewers are invited to replace one green space with a gray space. The green space removed is then trashed. Individuals are thereby given responsibility and are able to choose their destruction; they can experience the consequences of personally replacing a pieces of land/nature/history with the gray anonymity of impersonal sprawl. Seeing an “aerial” view of this process shows how the destruction of parts can be damaging to the whole.
